Plastic is made from oil, and plastic can be equally converted back into oil. TUBIS is the patent holder of a cold catalytic conversion (CCC) process, through which previously unusable plastic waste is converted into refined oil of high quality. Hence, TUBIS offers a solution that can lead to a full lifecycle of plastic material through either energetic utilization or preferably mechanical recycling for further usage in the production of industrial goods.

TUBIS offers a comprehensive business model

Starting point of the value-added chain of TUBIS is the purchase of plastic waste (solid recovered fuels – SRF) from classical recycling and waste management companies as well as industrial Clients under long-term supply contracts. Regarding the quality of the SRF, a particular level of purity is not required, rather any kind of plastic waste can be used, e.g. plastic bags and bottles, as well as potato chip bags or yogurt containers.

In the cold catalytic conversion process the SRF (up to 120 tons per day and plant) is heated to the point where most plastics soften and begin to emulsify. The hydrocarbons are cracked by the added catalyst (aluminium oxide), so that shorter-chain hydrocarbons evaporate from the hot oil mixture. The end result of this process is a an oil-gas-vapor mixture which is cooled and separated into low-sulphur oil and gas.

While the produced gas is reinserted into the production process, the oil can be employed for energetic purposes (e.g. light fuel oil or electricity generation) or as feedstock for industrial applications such as plastics, lubricants, rubber or fertilizer.

TUBIS processes shredded plastics (solid recovered fuels – SRF) which it receives under long-term supply contracts from waste management companies. The conversion plants are constructed on or in close proximity to the premises of the waste management companies.

TUBIS uses the patented Cold Catalytic Conversion (CCC) method to convert the SRF into pre-cleansed, refined oil. The process takes place in an oxygen free environment and under usage of aluminium as catalyst.

Product applications are highly prolific from an energetic usage to the utilization as feedstock in industrial products such as plastic packaging.

Adding Value

The central element in environmental sustainability is to close the cycle of products. The aim is to conserve natural resources by lowering the quota of materials used and reducing the burden of disposal capacities. To this day, only roughly one quarter of plastic waste in the EU undergoes mechanical recycling whereas the rest is used as substitute fuel or even ends up on landfills.

In 2014, the European Commission adopted a legislative proposal to review recycling and other waste-related targets, in which it proposed expanded targets for recycling waste, according to which by 2030 not less than 70% of household waste is to be recycled and prepared for reuse. In addition, this foresees the introduction of a maximum landfill rate of 25% by 2025 and a landfill ban by 2030 for reusable waste, such as plastics, paper, metal, glass and organic waste.

TUBIS offers an integrated solution to fully meet the proposed targets of the EU Commission, reinsert previously unused resources into the value chain by simultaneously lowering CO2 production to a significant extend and most importantly creating a high value product.
